What to do about that pesky gator

Living in Florida we are all too familar with alligators. They are in our lakes and rivers, our ponds and sometimes our backyards and pools.  However, you should never handle an alligator, not even a small one, because alligator bites can result in serious infection and it’s illegal.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has a program called the Statewide Nuisance Alligator Program (SNAP) to help remove alligators when they are a danger or not where they should be.

People concerned about an alligator should call our toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).

When someone concerned about an alligator in any of the following situations calls the Nuisance Alligator Hotline, they will dispatch one of their contracted nuisance alligator trappers to resolve the situation.

In general, an alligator is considered a nuisance if it is at least 4 feet long and the person calling believes it poses a threat to people, pets or property. There are situations must be removed, such as when an alligator under 4 feet is in your swimming pool, on your porch, garage or in a similar situation, call the Nuisance Alligator Hotline.
